Highland City grew up as the only stop on the 1885 rail line between Lakeland and Bartow, on ground that once held Fort Fraser, an 1837 Seminole War outpost briefly commanded by a young Zachary Taylor, and later became part of the Bone Valley phosphate region. Few Polk County stops trace their name back to quite as specific a pair of early investors.
